Coagulant Dose

Online automatic coagulation control systems utilising UV-Vis spectroscopy are the most advanced coagulation control systems available. By utilising absorption at multiple wavelengths, the nature of the natural organic matter (NOM) can be determined in real-time and the appropriate coagulant dose output, whether that be alum, ferric or any other coagulant.

NOM characterisation enables a better understanding of whether the organics in the raw water are hydrophobic or hydrophilic, and an indication of their molecular weight.

The future of Coagulation Control in Water Treatment

Achieving reliable automatic coagulation control is something many water companies struggle to maintain in highly variable (flashy) catchment areas. These areas can be at one time or another; typically low in particulates with a moderate to high natural organic matter (NOM) content or vice versa.

Ensure organics removal with Compass EOR – the advanced coagulation control system

Reduced DBP formation potential by utilising multiple UV wavelength analysis for NOM characterisation and effective organics removal.

Compass Automated Coagulation Control System from PMA – A Case Study

In 2010, PMA introduced the patented Compass coagulation control system from Lutra (previously H2Ope) to the UK water industry.

Real-time control of coagulant dosing for ensuring phosphorus compliance in wastewater treatment

There are two general approaches to phosphorus removal in wastewater treatment works. One is to modify activated sludge to maximise phosphorus removal, the second is to use a coagulant such as iron or aluminium, or in some plants, a bit of both might be used.
