TSS (Total Suspended Solids)

Total Suspended Solids (TSS) is a measurement of all the solids in a water sample after filtration and any water has been removed. It is carried out in a laboratory environment via a gravimetric method.  Suspended solids are made up of small solid particles which remain in suspension in water either as a colloid or due to the motion of the water. Sedimentation is often utilised to remove them in water treatment as they are usually relatively large particles.

A gravimetric method does not lend itself to process control or ensuring compliance with a discharge consent so online TSS measurement is usually carried out by measuring the turbidity of the water and assuming or creating a relationship between TSS and turbidity.  There is no universal relationship between the two, the measurements correlate but a degree of local calibration is always required.
